FAQs on varieties

What varieties of coconut oil are available to you?
We have Roasted, Cold Press and Virgin coconut oils with us.

What is the manufacturing process?
Roasted and cold-pressed coconut oil is extracted from dried coconut/copra. Virgin coconut oil is extracted from fresh coconut. For cold press, copra is not roasted, but roasted copra pieces are roasted before oil extraction. Process details are explained here

What raw materials are used in different coconut oil varieties, such as high-grade, cold-pressed, and virgin?
Fresh coconuts are used for Cocoguru cold-pressed virgin coconut oil.
Dried coconuts (Copra) are used for Cocoguru cold-pressed and high-grade coconut cooking oils.

What is the difference between Copra and Coconut?
Coconut is the fresh fruit of the coconut tree, while Copra is the dried kernel of the coconut.
We use copra to produce Cocoguru’s high-grade, cold-pressed coconut cooking oils, while coconut is used to produce Cocoguru’s cold-pressed virgin coconut oil.

What is the difference between high-grade and cold-pressed coconut cooking oils?
Cocoguru high-grade copra pieces are roasted before oil extraction, while Cocoguru cold-pressed copra pieces are not roasted before oil extraction.
Cocoguru high-grade coconut oil has more taste, aroma and shelf life compared to cold-pressed ones.
Cocoguru high-grade coconut oil is recommended for general cooking, while cold-pressed is recommended for deep frying purposes. More details can be found here

Why is high-grade coconut oil yellow in colour? While I think the best quality coconut oil should be transparent white.
It is a common perception that if the oil is yellow in colour, it is made from inferior-grade copra. But Cocoguru’s high-grade coconut oil is made from superior quality copra after roasting the pieces. Roasting of copra pieces makes the copra and oil turn golden from transparent white. Roasting of copra adds to taste, aroma and shelf life. In the case of regular coconut oil, the copra is not roasted and appears transparent white. More details can be found here

High-grade coconut oil smells different from normal coconut oils but is very pleasant. Is any perfume added?
Roasting of copra is the reason for enhanced, pleasant aroma and taste of Cocoguru high grade coconut oil. No perfumes are added.

We are told cold-pressed oils are better; why do you recommend high-grade/roasted oil?
Cold-pressed oils are always better than refined oils of any oil seed as they retain the natural taste, aroma, and nutrients. Unlike refined oils, cold-pressed oils are made from higher-grade oil seeds.
However, here we are comparing with roasted oil, which has all the goodness of cold-pressed oil, in addition to improved aroma, taste, and shelf life. Hence, Cocoguru recommends high-grade/roasted oil over cold-pressed oil.

Why don’t you have “extra” virgin coconut oil?
The Cocoguru virgin coconut oil is extracted from fresh coconuts through a cold-press process. The “extra” is just a tag used in the marketing by others, and there is no difference in the process.

Do you have wood-pressed oil?
We don’t have wood-pressed oil. We employ a steel expeller to press the oil. We believe wood-pressed oil is inferior in quality and ineffective in cost.
Quality – to press with wood, copra should not be dried. So, oil will go rancid fast due to moisture. Fungus develop on wooden pores when unused, and it cannot be removed easily
Cost—Because wood is soft compared to steel, a lesser amount of oil can be extracted, so oil goes to waste in cakes. Also, more labour force is required, which adds to cost.
Wood-pressed oil marketers build on people’s perceptions that it is traditional and better.

FAQs on properties

What are the oil specifications? Can you share the certificate of analysis?
Roasted and Cold-press coconut oils are filtered coconut oils. Detailed specifications can be found here
A certificate of analysis done at an NABL-accredited laboratory is attached here

Is your oil pure? Which variety? How do we know?
Cocoguru has strong views about food adulteration and makes every effort to prevent it.
All the varieties of Cocoguru coconut oil, namely the Cocoguru cold-pressed coconut cooking oil, the Cocoguru high-grade coconut cooking oil, the Cocoguru cold-pressed virgin coconut oil, and the Cocoguru hair oil, are pure and edible grade.
Coconut (dried or fresh) is the only raw material used to make Cocoguru coconut oil. Oil is extracted with minimal processing to retain the natural quality. Oil batches are regularly tested at both an internal laboratory and an external NABL-accredited laboratory. The food safety department randomly takes samples from the market and checks for adulteration. You are also welcome to take a random sample and check at a laboratory of your choice against the parameters mentioned in BIS (IS: 542-1962).

Is it refined?
No. Cocoguru coconut oils are not refined. They are Expressed Grade IA Raw as per Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for Coconut Oil (IS:542-1968).
Cocoguru coconut oils are made from high-grade coconuts and are suitable for edible use as is. Refined oils are made from low-quality, non-edible oils.

Does the oil solidify in winter?
Coconut oil normally solidifies below 24°C, so it should solidify in winter. However, the lower temperature should permeate through the package and reach the oil’s inner parts, which may take some time.

Do you add preservatives for a long life?
No preservatives or chemicals are used in the manufacturing process of Cocoguru coconut oils.

Even cold-pressed oil was not fully transparent; it was slightly yellow. Why?
Even in the cold press process, Copra is dried thoroughly before oil extraction. During drying, copra may turn a little yellow, and hence, the oil may be a little yellow.
The fully transparent white coconut oils available in the market are made from moist copra instead of fully dried ones and will soon go rancid.

Is the oil sticky?
Yes, coconut oils are naturally sticky.

I heard lauric acid is good; how much coconut oil is lauric acid?
Cocoguru coconut oils have about 50% lauric acid.

Coconut oil is mostly saturated fat; isn’t it bad?
Saturated fats from animal sources are bad as they are also long-chain. However, Cocoguru coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA), which are easily digestible. They are easily converted to energy and are good for health. Cocoguru oils have good cholesterol, which further helps with heart health. Saturated fats are highly stable and, hence, give oil a long shelf life. Also, the oil doesn’t break during long heating periods while deep frying.

Coconut oil has cholesterol, so isn’t it bad for the heart?
There are two types of cholesterol: good cholesterol (High-Density Lipoproteins, HDL) and bad cholesterol (Low-Density Lipoproteins, LDL). Cocoguru coconut oils have good cholesterol, reduce the incidence of bad cholesterol, and are good for the heart.

Coconut oil is as good as a mother’s milk on a baby; why?
Lauric acid is the key fatty acid found mainly in coconut oil. It is a medium-chain saturated fat. Lauric acid has great immunity-boosting properties as antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal.
